PHOTO FOR THE DAY
The pack. Well, a little tiny part of it. The rest were wisely sitting in the shade on the other side of the field. Only my 3 and the new guy, Malcom, were interested in this run.

PHOTO FOR THE DAY
Gasp! Another non-greyhound gracing the pages. This past weekend I attended a dog rescue event with, of course, camera in hand. I wanted to take them all home. Especially the Cavalier puppies. Sigh.

A LITTLE MORE HELP NEEDED
More information is coming to light about the Fort Worth animal abuse case. Examiner.com has run an article providing more information about the condition of the dogs and the rescue groups that have taken them in. To sum up: there were 7 different rescue groups that have accepted the 29 dogs (originally 28 dogs, but another one was found later); including GALT, GU, Texas Italian Greyhound Rescue (TIGR) (you can read about it on their site here and here), All Breed Rescue of Houston, Colin County Humane Society (link to one of the dogs they have - warning graphic photos), Saluki Tree of Life Alliance (STOLA) and Its a Grey Place of Louisiana. The dog breeds included greyhounds, Deerhounds, a Saluki and Saluki crosses. Please help out any way you can. Thanks.
HELP IS ON THE WAY
Most of my posts on this blog are light hearted and fun. I do that because I wanted this blog to focus on what I know and that is the joys of greyhound adoption after the greys find their adoptive family rather than what happens BAH (Before Adoptive Home). I strayed from that a bit last week when I posted about the Texas animal cruelty case involving 17 greyhounds (29 dogs total). After reading about the case on one of my favorite blogs, Tales and Tails, and doing a little more research, I was sickened, angry and very motivated to get the word out to as many people as I could; which resulted in the emails and blog and facebook posts.
Much to my surprise, Life With Dogs stopped by here and left a comment “Will do my best to help…”. I was thrilled. With such a huge following, anything posted on Nigel’s site would generate far more interest than my tiny blog (read by all of about 20 people. Thank you, btw!) and hopefully, and most importantly, generate some donations to help these greyhounds. In anticipation, I’ve checked the Life With Dogs site every day since, multiple times; nothing. Not even a mention. Well, damn. I figured they were just too busy over there.
Then yesterday rolled around and there was this little post. I was right, they were just too busy over there, because they were planning a charity auction with Carpe Canem! All proceeds go to the two greyhound rescue organizations that took in the abused greys, GALT and GU. Included in the auction with be the last Flat Nigel print; and it is an artist’s proof no less.
I have also donated a few items; packs of greyhound note cards featuring some of the images you have seen on this very blog, and two different 8 X 10 prints; one of “Treat Time?” (featured below) and one of “The Ride” (the masthead for this blog, scroll up) The auction will start on Thursday, July 22 and run through Wednesday, July 28. So go over there and bid and bid often!
Click here to go to the auction. There are already a large number of items to preview.
A big thank you should go out to Life With Dogs, Carpe Canum and all the other organizations that are donating items to the auction.
“Will do my best to help…” Sheesh, what an understatement. If everyone did their best like this, I can’t even imagine how much could be accomplished.

Jojo's first experience with Willow on a tennis ball tear. She was quite shocked to learn that once you've acquired the ball you take it, not to the person who will throw it again, but to the opposite end of the field as far away as possible. That way you get to watch your human get some much needed exercise.

A LOT OF HELP NEEDED
On Thursday, July 8 2010, 28 dogs were taken from a 'man' (I can think of so many other things to call him, but Mom reads this blog) in Fort Worth, TX; of those, 16 were greyhounds. They are in horrific condition, tick and parasite infested, filthy and severely underweight (males and females weighing 35 to 51 pounds, when normal weight is 50 - 85 pounds). It was estimated that 4 vet techs removed over 1,500 ticks from one grey, Nate, and that was after the GALT volunteers had already worked on him for 2 hours.
Additional information can be found at the GALT website, one of the groups to take in some of the greys.
The other group to help is Greyhounds Unlimited.
Videos are available; but I will warn you, they are hard to watch.
Click here and here for photos of the hounds. They're disturbing images, be warned now.
If you can, please help GALT or GU. They can use donations for the care of these dogs. (At the GALT site it is the Miss Mesa donation section) Thanks.

BONUS PHOTO FOR THE DAY
I know I have already posted the photo for the day, but (and looking at this photo, that's a big butt) I was going through a set of photos I forgot I had taken and found this one. (I know: "sheesh how can she forget what she takes?" Typically I don't, I'm looking through the images the minute I get home. These were taken the morning I left for my week long location photo shoot (see my other blog). So yes, I did completely forget about these until this morning. Sweet! It's like putting on your winter coat and finding money in the pocket.) This picture made me laugh out loud when I saw Dru's butt swinging off to the side. Apparently the toy engaged a defensive force field as she was running by. Or perhaps she practicing her gymnastics floor routine. I though it needed to be shared for weekend giggles. Enjoy!

We call this the flat dog syndrome. They look like deflated greyhound balloons littering the field. Just goes to show you how much of an effect the heat of summer has on the hounds.

This morning we got to practice with the flirt pole provided by my friends from Seize the Leash. Willow loved it and immediately attacked the fuzzy. Drusilla took a moment to warm up to it, probably because Willow was running mad circles while chasing it, but once she did she tried to pounce on it. Breeze was having none of it - it was just a long stick of death with a madly swinging squeaky. Though at one point she did run with Dru while Dru was chasing it. I made sure they were able to catch the 'prey' after chasing for a while. They were worn out completely in about 5 minutes. I like this game, though I was a bit dizzy by the end.

Have I mentioned just how much they love running the fence with the other dogs? For the most part they have even learned how to just run and not start a minor war. I just went many places in my head - "The War Among Breeds, next on the History Channel. Though Greylandia had soldiers that were far faster than the Muttrovia soldiers, their need for soft resting places and lots of naps was a serious problem the generals had to contend with. As for the Mutrovians they were easily distracted by yellow tennis balls. It wasn't a long war, more of a skirmish really."
