PHOTO FOR THE DAY

Those annoying older sisters, always barking at you over the littlest things, sometimes you have to tell them what you think in a not so subtle way.

I was just looking at the picture again and realized their tails look like crossed swords. En garde.

FOLLOW UP ON DRU'S TOE

Thanks for all the inquiries about the condition of Dru’s toe. She is doing quite well.

We were back in the vet on Friday for her 4 week follow up and they took new x-rays to see how the bones were healing. They look fantastic! So, big sigh of relief, no amputation is necessary. There was however, one break clearly seen on the x-ray that was not healing well that the vet was a little concerned about. I flashed back to the previous weekend when I was just getting home and the girls were doing their happy to see me dance, Dru let out a yelp and limped for the next few days. My suspicion was that one of the other girls stepped on her foot. The vet agreed, it probably caused one of the healing fractures to re-break. She’s grounded for another 4 weeks, but well on her way to recovery. Yeah!

Come to find out, after much research, the soft bandage is thought to be the best way to treat a broken toe in a greyhound; in particular because of the anatomy of a grey. As you know, there is so little fat on them that they are pretty bony. Those bony protrusions, wrists, knuckles, etc, tend to rub raw with a hard cast which in turn lends to open sores under the casting material. So the first week in a soft cast is tough while they knock it on everything, but in the long run it works out better. Which is what my vet said originally. Hmmmm… perhaps he knew what he was talking about after all. (I tend to question the experts, only to be proven wrong, time and time again. Sigh.)

My vet also prescribed something called Recovazon. It is a natural remedy that promotes the healing of bones. I truly believe giving it to Dru is the reason her seven jumbled bits of broken bone were formed into a cohesive unit in only 4 weeks. So for those of you who know of a dog or person (It is used for humans as well.) who breaks a bone in the future; I highly recommend it.

When Breeze came to live with me, it was three weeks before I could look her in the eye without her cowering and running outside or into her crate in sheer panic. Now this is what I get.

Testing out the newest anti-gravity laws. Willow, not knowing better, decided she would rewrite the laws of physics. Seems to have worked out quite well for her.

My friends had to put their girl, Dayna, down on Tuesday. She was diagnosed with cancer and given about 2 weeks to live about 5 months ago. She lived to the impossibly old greyhound age of 14.5 and was still running, albeit slowly, at playdate up until about 2 months ago. We will all miss her and her fighting spirit terribly.

To the shock and concern of the other dogs, Marvin selflessly grabbed the suspicious toy and ran to deposit it at a safe distance away from the rest of the pack, in case of explosion. It would have been much safer if he had opposable thumbs and had been able to throw it to that safe distance.

Apparently the answer is black and white and not open to debate - yes, playdate should be every day.

"I'm not talking to you."
"Well I'm not talking to you either."
"I can't even look at you. Why would you did that? You ruined the snackie vending machine for all of us."
"It's not my fault she has a camera that is so wimpy, it can't even withstand the force of a greyhound tongue."
"She spent the better part of 5 minutes wiping the slobber off the lens. Guess what happened during that time? That's right, she didn't give us snackies. Well played genius."

PHOTOS FOR THE DAY - UPSTART

Marvin (in the lovely brindle coat) can get some pretty serious air. I've been trying to capture him with all 4s off the ground for a while now. Typically with the assistance of his Mom and a teasing squeaky toy. She, of course, got him to do a major flying leap earlier when I was turned away. So we tried again. Little did we know Marvin was about to be completely upstaged by a new visitor to our group today, fresh off the track (and still at racing weight - that is why she looks so skinny) and in foster to adopt.

It went a little like this:

Marvin: "Stop dangling that thing above my head and just give it to me."
Rowena: "Hmmmm. That looks like a tempting squeaks."

Rowena: "MINE!"
Marvin: "Dude!"

Marvin: "WTF, newbie?"
Rowena: "What?"

I've never seen a greyhound leap like that. We were completely surprised (as, it appears, was Marvin). It was awesome!

(On another note - see how attractive those screaming monkeys are to the greys? Go buy one and support greyhound rescue!) :-)

SCREAMING MONKEYS AND THE PET BLOG HOP

Last month I had the absolute pleasure to meet the lovely Cara Brockhoff of Northcoast Greyhounds. She was visiting Tucson to acquire stock for her jewelry during the gem and mineral show. If you are not familiar with this incredible woman and what she and her husband have done for greyhounds, you really need to visit her website. She runs auctions and sales of greyhound themed jewelry and ALL earnings go to greyhound rescue. In addition, she and her husband rescue greys. I believe she currently has 7 seniors and a foster; though I haven’t spoken to her in a month so it could be up to 10 or 12 by now. :) One of my all-time favorite greyhound photos is of her pack.

But, far more important than all the work she does for the hounds, she is the provider of the Screaming Monkey!

Cara and my friend, RJ and Dillon’s Mom, have known each other for quite some time. My friend sent a number of my previous screaming monkey photos to Cara. As an indirect result and Cara’s need for a greyhound fix, when she came into town for the gem show she visited with us at playdate AND provided a suitcase full of screaming monkeys! A monkey for every grey!

The greys went wild. Period. There is no better description. They were sprinting in all directions, tossing monkeys into the air, play bowing. Arms and legs were flapping wildly as monkeys were carried proudly to owners during the showing off new prizes. Monkey shrieks and roars of laughter from the owners were heard for the next hour. Bedlam, mayhem and pure joy reigned supreme. We cannot thank Cara enough for making it one of the best playdates ever.

I have finally had a chance to go through the monkey photos. I know I am breaking tradition of the one photo per post here today, but there were just too many fun images to decide which one to put up. So here are some of my favorites of the screaming monkey playdate. Enjoy.

Also, go buy a(n) monkey(s) from Cara. Earnings from monkey sales are also donated to greyhound rescue.
