BROKEN TOE TREATMENT REQUEST

Dru broke her toe Thursday - shattered it into about 6 pieces. The diagnosis - no more flying for 8 - 12 weeks.

The vet said he doubted very much they would be able to repair it with surgery because the pieces were so tiny. He didn't want to put her in a hard cast because of potential swelling. She is currently in a soft bandage, limping around on 3 legs. If she bumps the foot or catches the bandages when laying down she lets out a yelp, I'm not sure it is protected quite enough and am going to be calling today to see what other options we may have. I would welcome any suggestions or comments on experience with treatment of broken toes in dogs.

Poor Dru.

You might find some help here

I'd certainly Google it hun. Also if you got her from a rescue place, you could ask them.

Hope she is in much less pain soon.

Funny you should ask! Blueberry broke her toe back in January and we are getting her splint off this week. Her splint goes all the way up to her elbow and it's pretty padded. She broke her splint in the first two weeks and we had to get it replaced. Her toe only broke in three places, though. Poor Dru! We gave her rimidyl for the first week pretty regularly. Blue's wasn't fixed surgically, either. They think that it's healing up really nicely, though, and that her toe won't even stick out to the side when we get her out of the splint. If you can get a hold of some old IV bags, they make great splint covers when you have to go outside, you just have to tape the top.

Poor girl! I would definately ask for more padding. Also give her lots of treats in kongs so that she settles in and works on the kong for a while....

I can only offer sympathy, no help as Beryl hasn't done this YET!! We have got enough problems with recurring happy tail:( Lots of luck to you and Dru, I don't envy either of you. Hope she heals well and quickly.
